Site: Native growth protection easement surrounding this site creates a secluded refuge. The high water table, setbacks from steep slopes, septic mound, and a section of woodland that divide the rear yard and created challenges. The owner wanted to incorporate a large covered outdoor room, spa, shed, greenhouse, and raised vegetable garden within the existing boundaries.
Solution: We created a series of rooms using architectural elements to define the space and purpose. Skylights and heaters incorporated within the covered deck structure provide welcome relief from rain and cold, while retaining the enjoyment of being outdoors. A picturesque greenhouse, where the paver path ends, creates a wonderful backdrop to raised brick vegetable beds. The deck off the study overlooks a waterfall set within a rich, varied planting. Arbors, paths, lawns and walls meld the rooms together.
